I saw this article in my local newspaper and thought it was stupid. It's not like the Toronto people deserved to stay - they all sucked. Did this guy even listen to Derek?

If any region has anything to bitch at, it's Manitoba. When was the last time (besides Rob James, he doesn't count) a Manitoban was anywhere near the Top 10?

What about PEI? My adopted home has never had anyone on the show at all that I can recall. Of course, the entire province of Prince Edward Island has less people than a smallish Ontario city, and TO has, like, a third of the people in Canada or something.

Seriously, I have a sort of a pessimistic theory about CI. That is that except for Ontario, due to the basic dynamic of Canada where everybody has an inferiority complex directed at Ontario (Ontario's is directed against the US), regional voting is a huge factor, maybe the main factor. I mean, I watched my people furiously voting for Craig Sharpe, who, without making any uncalled-for and homophobic cracks about him looking like a baby dyke, really isn't much of a singer. Just my own opinion but I never cared for him much. It was frustrating to watch the people I liked get voted off until Canada reduced the field to the most unimpressive mediocrity it could. Without regional voting, Craig would not be #2. I think my mother kept him in the competition single-handed (she's from just down the shore!). And Ontario and especially TO is the big loser in this because they don't block vote, I think. I can actually kinda understand their frustration.

It's a really stupid move for a producer of the show to be encouraging more regional voting, though. If the whole thing degenerates into nothing but a regional voting contest, the show will be even dumber than AI.

But the regional voting crap happens in all Idols. Look at American Idol; people vote for their local boy just to stick it up x y or z. Here in Australia, News Ltd devotes mountains of space both online and in their newspapers to Australian Idol. The state papers will have headlines designed to stir up state v state mentality, telling readers they MUST vote for x because they're from Melbourne and up against 4 Sydneysiders therefore all of Melbourne should vote.

Eurovision made drastic changes to their voting procedures to try to prevent this from happening, as nations voted politically. Remember World Idol? Similar voting system, and designed to try to avoid political rivalries.

That's interesting about the media deliberately whipping up regionalism in order to boost interest in the show. The Newfoundland media of course dotes on their candidates and remembers their past runners-up with undying Love. Seriously, you can buy T-shirts with the faces of the Newfoundland idols and everything, my mother has one (she even has Craig's album, now to me that's dedication, not to mention self-sacrifice :D), there's enormous love and dedication in the public and the media to past NL idol contenders. In the rest of the country I can't speak for the tone of the local media coverage - the PEI media has never had a local boy or girl to fawn over and barely pays any attention to Idol :D.

I'm really curious, how do you design a voting system to reduce political or regional voting?

Eurovision won't let callers vote for their own country, for one thing. Whether reality shows can block votes that 'over favour' one country or another (Germany ALWAYS gives max points to Turkey and vice versa, Norway and Sweden always do the same for each other) and dump those totals from the voting stats, well that's up to the shows. All entirely possible, as you're dialing into specific lines which go straight to computers dedicated to managing the data.

News Ltd adores reality shows - check out http://www.news.com.au/bigbrother and http://www.news.com.au/idol - entire sections of the site devoted to the shows. They give away dvds and other crap regarding the shows, in their state newspapers too. Sad sad sad.....when it comes down to the last five or so, the Herald Sun (biggest daily newspaper here in Victoria) will have any Victorian entrants on its front page, egging on readers to support the local against whoever. *rolls eyes* It's not at all about voting for someone due to talent.
