The Carly Smithson Plot Thickens... Should She Be Disqualified for Working with Randy Jackson in the Past?

The Carly Smithson plant debacle grows stronger by the day. We've done our research to find out something very interesting. Carly was signed to MCA records during the same time period that Randy Jackson was the senior vice president of A&R. Carly was at MCA in 1999. Randy started at MCA in 1998 and was there for 4 years. Should this mean an automatic disqualification for Carly? We think so! An American Idol wikipedia entry says that Thomas Lowe was disqualified last year " because it was publicized that he had been signed to BMG while Cowell was at the label, which is against Idol rules." If it is, we demand that Carly be disqualified. If it isn't against the rules, that's some shady, shady stuff going on. This plant definitely made it to the top 24 based on a prior connection with Randy, which should be completely unfair.

I think she is potentially better than Gina Glocksen and maybe she should adopt Gina's style rather than the bland pop songs she's done so far. Guess that would double her record sale (to 600. Haha).
Why are they pimping her? Have you heard the other people who made it through? Unlike previous seasons, nearly none of them was really good. Most were decent at best. So probably no one else is left to pimp...

Uh, I'm new here on this site, and really, what is the big freaking deal on these people? Plants? Give me a break!! Who Cares?!
I think it's great that Carly gets a second chance at a career. Who cares if she had an album that tanked. Many, many do. She's older, maybe a different type style now, maybe it'll work this time. If she only sold 300 albums, then really no one heard her before. So she is undiscovered.
And what is the big deal with the other people playing in bands. Taylor was in a band, Chris Daughtry was, Bo Bice and a few others.
And just because Carly was at a label at the same time Randy Jackson was.....ohhhhh conspiracy.....maybe they didn't even know each other or ever meet! Her album sold 300 copies!!!! Maybe just a coincidence.
I NEVER heard of ANY of these people, so to me they are completely undiscovered. (except of course to those 300 people who bought Carly's album).

There are sooo many struggling artists out here in LA and elsewhere. And there are so many places now to showcase your music - websites, myspace, etc.
Somebody will have heard of someone, somewhere.
If they don't currently have a record deal/contract now, then they should be allowed to compete.

And, in a way, I'm glad. I ONLY want to HEAR GOOD singers. I am tired of the bad people, immature voices on the show. It is NOT funny anymore (well, never really was actually).

So, I know the goal of this site is to hate on somebody, to help tank the show, or whatever, and most of the time I can appreciate that. And the acerbic wit that accompanies it.
But, this ''plant'' thing is dumb. Maybe I'm too naive but really, I don't care and could give a rats butt what connections people have or used to have. Heck, my uncle is a record producer too, so does that mean I can't audition for AI ?? Cause of my ''connection"? Which has brought me nothing so far?

I guess not.

I generally agree with you. Indeed people deserve a second chance. I agree about the fact that people here got a bit carried away and made Carly a scapegoat for all of AI's oh-so-many viles in addition to all of the worlds' troubles - from the crucifixion of Jesus to the re-election of George Bush.
I agree that it is not necessarily bad (or new) that people with recording experience get in the show. I also think, and I said it in my previous comment, that Carly is a good singer. Potentially one of the best among the so many mediocre singers who made the next round this season.
I think the point the site is trying to make (and will someone correct me if I'm wrong), is that a disproportionally large number of connected people made it to the finals this year, and it raises some questions. Can it be incidental, given the fact that a random auditioner has close to 0% chance to get anywhere near the judges in the first place, even if s/he is really good? Can it be that the producers intentionally planted these people, without forcing them through the tedious filtering process, to make sure that a second Sanjaya won't happen this year?
I don't know if this is indeed the case or not, but it can make you stop and think.

I didn't know all that. I thought he was good during the Hollywood week. And I couldn't figure out why he was cut.

His segment was not broadcast in the US but someone posted it to youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRDyGD94r8Q. He's singing one of my favorite songs sooo well.

They are not going to kick her off for this. Look at the history algebraically:

Frenchie + soft porn pics = kicked off
Antoinella + soft porn pics = VFTW gold

Tom Lowe + links to Simon = kicked off
Carly the Plant + links to Randy = VFTW gold

By not publishing the rules, AI TPTB can cite whatever rules they want.

The show is rigged, people -- and, more and more, VFTW is showing the show for what it is.

Would this surprise me?? HARDLY. In fact, remember, this was the girl who was supposed to win season five (two years ago, while under the contract??) but for her visa problems...

Now, the show desperate for a real winner, they are going to put her on their label, hook or crook.

I'm just not convinced that Clive Davis is going to want to go for someone who's that much of a flop in a previous major-label project.

Early prediction for the final: Smithson-Archuleta.

Early winner prediction: Archuleta, but Smithson gets a deal with 19 for playing along.
