Wonder why Garrett Haley picked such a boring song?

ETOnline has a great piece on their site where Garrett admits that the show screwed him over by forcing him to sing "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do." The contestants this year apparently pick 3 songs off of a list of 50 (that's not a lot) and then are assigned one of the songs. Garrett didn't get any of the songs he picked, and was then basically forced to sing the one he did. Real fair, Idol. First you give the kid no screen time. Then you throw him up on stage with a song he didn't even pick. Yes, he wasn't very good, but it looks like he wasn't even given the chance to be. Just another reason to Vote for the Worst and make fun of this ridiculously awful show.

What bullshit.  And to think people defend this show.

Edit:  Hey I see my sigline :D

That is really sickening. I mean: Garrett didn't have a chance anyway, so why sabotage his one moment to express himself? I mean, I know being on TV is not that big of a deal, but he went through a lot to get on this show and deserved at least a humane putting-down. So first having no control over song choice AND THEN Simon lets into him and ridicules him on national tv! Beef companies treat cattle better.

It's par for the course for Idol to screw people over and send them home.  But this is worse than that.  Remember, Simon BURIED this kid in his comments.  He went out of his way to humiliate Garrett, and Garett just took it and smiled.

Garett is a winner in my book, and it's just a bonus that he doesn't have to endure any further garbage treatment from Idol.

Agreed. Garrett showed maturity and grace in handling the bullshit Nigel and co. put him in. I'm voting extra hard this season just because of this.

i am furious over this and have come over to the dark side-haha-he seems to have been sabotaged
simon's remarks to him seemed to come out of left field also
and this song was not even the 60s version of the song
the slow tempo was done by sedaka in the 70s

i just wish he was picked by your site (even though 99% of the guys are worse than him)so we could have kept him on till the end!!

keep up the good work VFTW!!!!

Crappy, but not surprising.

That's a shame. He really did get a raw deal. You guys should try to get Garrett to come on the radio show, and talk about the experience. It would be interesting to hear what he has to say.

Forcing a contestant to sing a song they really don't want to in order to get a shoddy performance out of them...hmmm, why am I not surprised??

AND it should be noted: "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" was obviously chosen as AN EXIT SONG (an exit from a relationship, an exit from the show).

Why am I surprised? Treating people like shit is nothing new to Idol. This is just another example that the fix is in! Wake up and smell the dung heap America!

*In interest of full disclosure, this in no way means that I will stop watching Idol. I love Idol because I have no life.*
