The performance David stole this week was Chris Cornell's version of "Billie Jean."
Fuck all you at vftw. How did he steal Chris cornells version? Kristy stole Lee Greenwoods performance, Ramiele stole Anne Wilson's performance. They do covers, whats wrong with that? You guys just don't like David because he is good. He has an amazing voice and he's a really good guitarist too. The judges praised him for being original because that is a version of a classic 99% of earths population has never heard and he found that and did a great job with it. Also, if you didn't have your heads up each others asses all the time you might have heard ryan say "Here's David Cook doing Chris Cornells version of Billie Jean". Go fuck yourselves. Some of us here are trying to enjoy talent yet all you want is crap.
Chris Cornell is coming out with a new solo album in May. And you guessed it, the first single will be "Billie Jean." This according to my Fox News station.
As far as Cook goes, what I don't like is the fact that he is doing EXACTLY what Chris Daughtry did in Season 5. He was also praised by the judges to the high heavens. I almost hope this douche wins so he is stuck in the crappy AI contract and does NOT have the freedom to front his own band ala Daughtry.
I was pissed when Daugtry pulled this shit, and I'm even more pissed that Cook is doing the very same thing. He even admitted to studying the man's fucking audition for Chrissakes. "Ohhhh, I'm going to go on Idol, do everything Daughtry did, come in 4th place, start my own band, and sell 4 million copies." Wow, how original.
Schmevin is smart! The others who are pimping CRook on the vine have been members for a day... hmmmmmm Is CRook's errrrrr Cook's family flooding this Blog?? I think maybe!!
while the haters for haters sake will simply view this comment as praise for david cook, the real point of this comment is not as much praising david as it is pointing out the stupidity in so many posts that are knocking him.
on the other hand, several people have made comments with some pretty valid points.
first off, controversy not necessary at all. cook was introduced to be singing Chris Cornell's version of the song.
additionally, anyone who says he did a note for note cover of it is clearly tone-deaf. cook followed the same flow, did some of the sections note for note, or at least note for every-other note, but also threw in a melody tweak or two. he opted not to chase all of the notes cornell did in the accoustic version as well, and aside from missing a pretty unimportant note in the latter part of the song, he hit what he went for very well, and in my opinion went for the right notes out of what cornell did, and threw in a few of his own in good spots, like the last bit of the chorus when he kicked up higher on that draw-out before dropping it back down.
another good point... these people have a week. the smart thing to do is find a risky, obscure and kick-ass arrangement of a song, throw in your own flavor of tweaks here or there but keep it recognizable, and then work with the band on it, rehearse, and give it your best performance. i think he did all of that pretty well.
next, about the judges. as someone pointed out, randy didn't say he was original because he made that arrangement of the song up. he said that he was probably the most original and boldest contestant they'd had on the show, and that he could win the whole thing. if someone takes those statements, after the song was introduced to be a cover of SOMEONE ELSE'S COVER OF AN ORIGINAL SONG, and walks away thinking that he was just praised for writing an amazingly original arrangement, then THEY ARE THE ONE'S WHO ARE STUPID.
His choice of arrangements have been very original. the style that he's brought to those arrangements has been distinctly his own, and i think it is easy to watch him and get a feel for who he is as a musician even while he's performing other people's work. that's pretty much the point of the show
paula abdul said he is very smart, and very brave. hmmm... sounds like maybe she knew that he was doing someone else's version of the song other than the original. sounds like maybe she was commending him on his intelligent choices of songs and arrangements. choosing well known and well liked and powerful songs, and doing rocking arrangements of them while adding in his own tweaks, and doing that WELL.
and simon hit the nail on the head. you do any cornell version of anything... and this goes for cornell too, as we see in the live version... and you're gonna end with something that's totally insane, or amazing. and david cook did an amazing job of it with billie jean.
in other news...david archuletta would make a really nice christmas album. but you gotta feel for the kid. he's got amazing natural talent. quality tone, incredible control, great range, all that fun stuff. but he's had voice coaches and been "trained" exactly what notes to sing and how to sing them for like the past decade, and the kid's only 17! if someone would keep this kid's father, and anyone remotely resembling a voice coach AS FAR AWAY FROM HIM AS POSSIBLE for a few years, he'd have a chance to really develop and might just find that spark and figure out what he can really bring to the table as a musician. but as it stands they're doing every they can to just have him spit out replica versions of songs left and right.
Wasn't this "Songs from the year you were born" week? If David Cook was specifically introduced as doing Chris Cornell's "Billie Jean," then that would make him what, about 2 years old?
Add me to the David Cook isn't evil list. I like him quite a bit, to me he is the only one worth watching the show for now that Danny and Amanda are gone.
I also have to agree that the judges comments and lack of music knowledge aren't any of the contestant's faults, in fact, I think this season we have seen alot of WTF? faces on the contestants during the judges remarks because some of their comments are so out of touch with the music world today. And they didn't just miss on David's performance last night, even Paula claimed that there were alot of obscure songs chosen. And Randy's agreement that David Archuletta's original songs' singer was "amazing" was the worst offender, IMO, it was clear that he had absolutely no idea of who David A was talking about when he heard the name of the original artist.
I have maintained that each judge has a miniscule arena of music that they know and none knows outside of their little box and that's why we get some of the effed up judgements that we get, like last night. I have no doubt that Randy, Paula and Simon had no idea that Chris Cornell's version of that song ever existed, I would actually be surprised if even 1 of them knew that Chris Cornell was still around making music, I am almost positive that they thought he died along with the 90's. Sad isn't it?
In this instance I would really lay off all the contestants, they have no control over what the judges do and do not know about music. This is all Nigel's fault, IMO, for hiring 3 baboons and not giving them at least a cheat sheet of songs and their artists to refer to, but they should actually all be given a tape of the songs by the original artists so they can hear what they should sound like and compare to what the contestants do with them and be made to sit in a room with a grown-up to make sure they actually listen to the tape.
This subject has probably been beaten to death so I mainly wanna say I'M SO GLAD that dude is kicking Disneyboy's ass in votes.
And, I don't expect these kids to write a totally new arrangement every week, especially when they have to learn cheesy group shit. I'd rather hear a copy of a relatively obscure version than a copy of an original that's been sung to death. David didn't "steal" any more than divas "steal" Whitney's etc sappy ballads. Ryan should have credited CC much more clearly (and MJ for that matter; the whole intro was muddy) but that's not David's fault, nor that the judges don't know their shit.
Oh yeah, and he's kicking Disneyboy's ass in votes! 'Bout fucking time someone did that.
The thing is, this is a singing competition not a song writing competition. Yes, the contestants can change things up and perform the songs in their own style, but none of them are breaking any new ground and--let's face it--David Cook out-sings and out-performs the rest of the bunch on a consistent basis. It's not really his fault if the judges decide to call him creative & original, or if the fact that he's singing other artist's versions of the songs gets glazed over.
And the fact is, he is still bringing his own style and voice every week--and in my opinion he's doing a better job of singing the songs than the people he's "stealing" his performances from (not saying CC or Doxology are bad by any stretch of the imagination, I just think David really killed those performances).
Plus I'm pretty sure Chris Cornell & Doxology had more than a week to perfect their versions of these songs . . . how much can you really expect someone to do in a week as far as learning a new song AND messing around with the arrangement, and still sound polished and prepared?
Paula got it right tonight when she said this performance showed how smart he is. He's consistently picking interesting songs and arrangements that show off his talent--which you have to admit he has. I'd personally rather listen to someone who doesn't change things up constantly but gives a killer performance than someone who tries to be better and more creative than the have the talent to carry . . .
I am furious that I am still thinking of David Cooks' performance. Even though credit was given to Chris Cornell, what happened all of the other times he he didn't give credit. DOXOLOGY's Eleanor Rigby and Me First and the Gimme Gimme's Hello. American Idol is about cover songs, but when is this guy going to come up with his own versions of them? Good singer, maybe but is he original?
I was going to try to defend the judges' praises of Cook's creativity, but I failed. Other contestants have modified arrangements and been creative (Chikezie) more than Cook has, so for Randy to call Cook *most* creative means he couldn't have heard Cornell's version and probably didn't hear Ryan's announcement. And DOXOLOGY's Eleanor Rigby wasn't even announced, so they surely missed that as well. It is pretty bothersome that the sources of borrowed arrangements are not better clarified. A large portion of us don't listen to Ryan or didn't hear him mention Chris Cornell. Maybe the *performers* should be required to credit their sources on camera, before and/or after they sing. And of course, on the itunes recordings. In addition, the judges should be fully prepped before the show on what arrangements are being sung.
That said, it was still a risk on Cook's part, which, as Simon said, could have been insane or amazing. I think Cook sang this much better than Cornell did and pulled off an amazing performance that could have easily tanked with a less seasoned performer. The dude is clever and experienced enough to find good arrangements for himself (and he can add some creativity of his own when he needs to, e.g. "Hello"). And he's confident enough to use them. I can't dock him for any of that. He still deserved props tonight for what was the most memorable performance of the night and (imho) his best performance so far.
Correction...I see that he didn't completely come up with that arrangement of "Hello" either (inspired by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes?). So he's covered about 3 covers, I suppose. I'm glad they finally gave some credit where it was due this time, but they need to step it up. I still think some rules should be enforced so that sources are clearly credited, but at the end of the day, it's really David's responsibility to let everyone know when he's working with someone else's arrangement. For all we know, he may have told Ryan and the producers, and assumed that the sources would be properly credited. But he can't count on anyone else. When the judges cluelessly give him credit and he doesn't enlighten them, that's a problem.
I've been visiting this site since last season, and this is probably the most balanced and sensical comment I've seen.
The judges should be better prepared. The original artists should be credited in some way - but maybe time constraints prevent them from doing so on the show? Or maybe instead of their 'cute' interviews, they could actually give more info on their song choice and less info on embarrassing moments, their childhood, etc.
As for this particular song, I didn't know who Chris Cornell was (heard of Soundgarden, just didn't know the members' names) until a friend told me what Seacrest had said. Maybe with all this hype he'll get some more interest from David Cook performing his version of the song.
So the judges look silly, David Cook was amazing, and Chris Cornell gets some publicity by proxy. Everyone wins.
Can't believe I'm actually going to defend someone on this, but David is probably the only one whose performance I'm actually interested in hearing each week.
Cover or not, he actually sounds like he has some talent, and can perform.
Can't stand KKKristy, and almost puked at her song choice. Way to count on patriotism card, rather the VFTWers, to keep herself on the show.
Can't stand David Archuleta, and his constant swinging jaw & lip licking.
Jason Castro is really starting to remind me of Jar Jar Binks, with his creepy eye expressions and weird f'ing smile.
Brooke is so squeaky clean, can't wait to see her in porn in a year or so.
I knew it right away. I actually love Chris Cornell's version and I have it on one of my playlists on my iPod. It sounded exactly like it. Everything was to the note. Even when the instruments kicked in. I hated how they gave him credit for being original when he just took the arrangement from someone else. Isn't this the second time this has happened with him this season?
You and everyone else who is bashing David Cook for not being "original" and not giving credit where credit is due are a bunch of incompetent IDIOTS! Yes, David Cook is the best contestant on the show. That's not why I'm defending him. I'm defending him because you MORONS are leaving out the FACT that as Ryan introduced David Cook, he said "And now here is David Cook with Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean..." You're a bunch of idiots who don't pay attention and just want to complain about someone! Get your story straight before saying someone is stealing. Fucking idiot!
Say what you want. I voted for KKKristy, like a good worster, but truth be told--David's was the only performance we're all still talking about. For better or worse, he made an impression..... damn him.
That irritated me too. I didn't hear Ryan's introduction, but knew where Cook got the version. I just kinda rolled my eyes when they praised Cook for being so brave and original (or whatever the hell they said). I did think he did a decent version of Cornell's cover, but I think it's lame that the judges seem to be completely unaware that he was going an arrangement that had been done (but I guess that it's par for the course for AI).
This is off topic, but I really wished we could've seen Amanda's version of "On the Dark Side" tonight. Our Chile would've blown everyone off the stage
Yes...we had no doubt this was someone else's cover of the song. Ryan said it. What I'm impressed with; is that he had to pick a song from the year he was born, and chose to do it in way that suited him. Would you rather he had done it like Michael?!
It was a great move...the song rocked...the hair doesn't bother me so much anymore. It was the best part of tonight's show.
Kristy gives me the creeps. Way too phony acting. I can't watch her...she makes me uncomfortable (besides the fact that she can't sing).
I wish he would have done it like the old Letterman bit andsang "The chair is not my son."
I'd have loved to see the judges' reaction to that.
That said, I have to admit he was by far the best singer tonight and about the only one who had any real emotion in his singing. Though Amanda would have rocked!
You know, Amanda was born in 1984, so I googled top 100 hits of 1984 to try and figure out what she might sing. Here are my top 5 choices from that list:
5. Pink Houses - John Cougar Mellencamp
4. Legs - ZZ Top
3. Cum On Feel The Noize - Quiet Riot
2. Sister Christian - Night Ranger
1. On The Dark Side - John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band (this is the one Amanda herself said she was planning on singing, and it would have rocked all of our asses to hell and back, chile!)
She was going to do "On The Dark Side" very good Scott!
Back to Cook! Seacrest might have said it but the judges sure didn't here him and Amarica was left with the impression this "puppet" came up with that version. Did he sing it well... I will say yeah. Did he do it like a thief? Yup! That was plagiaristic to the max!!
Tell me these fucken judges don't have an agenda! Simon's take on KKKristy was whacked!!
I hate to say it... but it didn't suck. I've heard the original, and I am a big fan of Chris Cornell... but you have to give Cook this much--in a season full of complete crap, he at least can carry a tune, and seems to have semi-decent taste in the songs he chooses to steal... which is more than I can say for KKKristy. Someone put the poor girl out of her misery already! (Not that I won't vote for her. She's the hideously wonderful trainwreck you can't bring yourself to look away from...)
"...and seems to have semi-decent taste in the songs he chooses to steal..."
EXACTLY!!! He's a good thief! He has not shown an iota of originality!! Chris Cornwell took that song and made it his own. DOXOLOGY took Elenor Rigby and owned it! David Cook has proven he is excellent at spotting artists who are good at making hit songs sound unique. In short... He's a puppet!
dude, spellcheck is clearly not your friend (and it should be--Cornell, not Cornwell...) and having listened to the performances a second time, I have to say, David's performance was NOT note-for-note like Cornell's, and I honestly can't find any fault with it. So what if he covered someone else's cover?? It's AI for cripe's sake! No one is watching this show for the originality factor. He can sing, and he's a lot of fun to look at, and I for one am watching to see whose album I would buy and which guy I would do, given the chance. (Straight guys, don't even PLAY like you aren't voting for KKKristy for those exact reasons.) David comfortably fits all my criteria. I say Yay! for pretty boys who can carry a tune, otherwise I'd have no reason to watch this pathetic show. Woohoo David!
I'm not a fan...but don't blame the poor tool cuz the judges are apparently deaf and didn't listen to his intro that clearly stated he was doing the Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean.
does the guy have a good rock voice?? i think he does. can i get past the combover?? not sure. the whole original thing is not david's problem. that would be the judges. they (judges) only show how smart they are by making comments as they do about originality when they obviously know nothing but pop.
I agree he's got a great voice. And I think that when he can play his own music, we might actually see that he is original. However I agree, that hair has GOT to go! Can't the stylists do anything for it???
In the past I also thought Cook was a little too cocky, however he has appeared to be a little more humble and respective of the judges opinions as of late.
oh I KNOW who soundgarden is, I just don't care enough about them to care about the names of the people who are in the band. You know to each to there own.
That he covered that song is not the problem, since Ryan mentioned it. But:
1. Some on the VFTW forum called it even before song choices were leaked; so predictable.
2. He sang it note for note and the judges criticized other contestants for this; instead they pimped David C. to heaven since they had no clue what the original cover was like.
There shouldn't even be the slightest bit of controversy. Ryan said it was Chris Cornell's version. The whole point of American Idol is the contestants sing cover songs -- so if David Cook "stole" Cornell's song, everyone is "stealing" someone else's song.
The judges didn't technically call the performance original. Randy referred to Cook as the "most original" contestant, which I guess is a little different.
My point is, this shouldn't be an issue, because the show wasn't trying to hide the fact that he was covering Chris Cornell's version. Ryan was pretty up-front about it. If David Cook tried to claim this was an original arrangement he put together himself, then he should be called on it.
yeah, and on last weeks' episode, David was talking about all of the songs that he sang and how he was influenced by other bands covering them.
who cares if he does someone else's version of the song? so long as he admits to doing it, why does everyone make a fuss?

I was going to try to defend
Correction...I see that he
Correction...I see that he didn't completely come up with that arrangement of "Hello" either (inspired by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes?).
I've been visiting this site
Can't believe I'm actually
"David is probably the only
"David is probably the only one whose performance I'm actually interested in hearing each week."
So true. He seems to be far beyond the competition. If he doesn't win, I think I will finally stop watching this awful show.
Then again, he may be better off "losing" and following in Daughtry's footsteps.
He should change his name to
He should change his name to David Crook now that he keeps stealing other people's originality...
u didn't get exactly what is
u didn't get exactly what is happened, i just found the truth of the problem on multiraciallove.com u will see how it comes
I knew it right away. I
I knew it right away.
You and everyone else who is
You and everyone else who is bashing David Cook for not being "original" and not giving credit where credit is due are a bunch of incompetent IDIOTS!
I voted
Say what you want. I voted for KKKristy, like a good worster, but truth be told--David's was the only performance we're all still talking about. For better or worse, he made an impression..... damn him.
That irritated me too. I
That irritated me too.
Yes...we had no doubt this
Yes...we had no doubt this was someone else's cover of the song.
Would you rather he had done
Would you rather he had done it like Michael?!
I wish he would have done it like the old Letterman bit andsang "The chair is not my son."
I'd have loved to see the judges' reaction to that.
That said, I have to admit he was by far the best singer tonight and about the only one who had any real emotion in his singing. Though Amanda would have rocked!
Though Amanda would have
Though Amanda would have rocked!
I miss Amanda.
You can play too:

She was going to do "On The
She was going to do "On The Dark Side" very good Scott!
I hate to say it... but it
I hate to say it... but it didn't suck.
"...and seems to have
"...and seems to have semi-decent taste in the songs he chooses to steal..."
EXACTLY!!! He's a good thief! He has not shown an iota of originality!! Chris Cornwell took that song and made it his own. DOXOLOGY took Elenor Rigby and owned it! David Cook has proven he is excellent at spotting artists who are good at making hit songs sound unique. In short... He's a puppet!
dude, spellcheck is clearly
dude, spellcheck is clearly not your friend (and it should be--Cornell, not Cornwell...) and having listened to the performances a second time, I have to say, David's performance was NOT note-for-note like Cornell's, and I honestly can't find any fault with it.
David Cook is short,
David Cook is short, hideous, and a greaseball. How can anyone seriously find him attractive?
HesucksandIhatehim. >:(
WTF.... where did I
WTF.... where did I misspell? The rest you wrote... eh. LOL
David's a pretty boy?
David's a pretty boy? Really? Not that I don't find him attractive...I just didn't think anyone else did. :)
I'm not a fan...but don't
I'm not a fan...but don't blame the poor tool cuz the judges are apparently deaf and didn't listen to his intro that clearly stated he was doing the Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean.
does the guy have a good
does the guy have a good rock voice?? i think he does. can i get past the combover?? not sure. the whole original thing is not david's problem. that would be the judges. they (judges) only show how smart they are by making comments as they do about originality when they obviously know nothing but pop.
I agree he's got a great
I agree he's got a great voice. And I think that when he can play his own music, we might actually see that he is original. However I agree, that hair has GOT to go! Can't the stylists do anything for it???
In the past I also thought Cook was a little too cocky, however he has appeared to be a little more humble and respective of the judges opinions as of late.
and btw... david sang
and btw... david sang cornell's version better than cornell sang it himself. (live)
I thought it was great
I thought it was great myself.. though I have no clue who this Cornell guy is. I guess I should watch the video :lbf
eta: okay I like DC's version much better than this live one **votes double time for KKKristy**
Chris Cornell...lead singer
Chris Cornell...lead singer of Sound Garden and Audioslave. He's also tried to solo thing a few times.
Anyone who doesnt know
Anyone who doesnt know soundgarden should not be able to have an opinion about music, period.
oh I KNOW who soundgarden
oh I KNOW who soundgarden is, I just don't care enough about them to care about the names of the people who are in the band. You know to each to there own.
That he covered that song is
That he covered that song is not the problem, since Ryan mentioned it. But:
1. Some on the VFTW forum called it even before song choices were leaked; so predictable.
2. He sang it note for note and the judges criticized other contestants for this; instead they pimped David C. to heaven since they had no clue what the original cover was like.
There shouldn't even be the
There shouldn't even be the slightest bit of controversy. Ryan said it was Chris Cornell's version. The whole point of American Idol is the contestants sing cover songs -- so if David Cook "stole" Cornell's song, everyone is "stealing" someone else's song.
The issue is that he was
The issue is that he was praised for his originality when it wasn't original.
The judges didn't
The judges didn't technically call the performance original. Randy referred to Cook as the "most original" contestant, which I guess is a little different.
My point is, this shouldn't be an issue, because the show wasn't trying to hide the fact that he was covering Chris Cornell's version. Ryan was pretty up-front about it. If David Cook tried to claim this was an original arrangement he put together himself, then he should be called on it.
yeah, and on last weeks'
yeah, and on last weeks' episode, David was talking about all of the songs that he sang and how he was influenced by other bands covering them.
who cares if he does someone else's version of the song? so long as he admits to doing it, why does everyone make a fuss?
