Simon Admits this Season Sucks Because the Contestants Have No Personality

So much for the best season ever! Simon Cowell was asked by Variety why season 7 isn't interesting and he said that the contestants have no personality. "They are giving very safe answers to questions, making safe song selections. We are not getting a sense of who they are. We have to try to pull it out of them more." VFTW figured this one out a long time ago. Looks like they should put us on their payroll. Or tell David Archuleta's stage dad to stop beating the contestants into submission.

Analog, I have to agree with you on the music; I don't know much about stuff after about 1989. All the stuff with "runs" sounds to me like someone who can't find the pitch and so they scream all around it--through their noses. Who can tell the difference between any of the so-called divas anyway? You can *always* tell the difference between, say, Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top. AND, no one else will ever sound like they do.

That said, even if they take almost any genre/era of music for this karoke show, the performance will always be compared, usually unfavorably to the original. There's a reason the original was a hit--it was performed by the artist who wrote it him/herself or it was written for that person's style and ability.

They're both phenomenal singers, but Neil Sadaka does Stevie Ray Vaughn? --nah, I don't think so.

If you want to find a good singer, let them either (a) all sing the same song, or (b) sing something no one knows (perhaps written especially for that person's style/range).

But then, viewers might actually have to do some critical thinking.

Can you believe that I'm attracted to him, too? I had the hots for him before Michael Johns came along. Have you lost all respect for me now? :)

I think Simon's fairly honest, he just has a limited aresenal of insults. But he absolutely does say things sometimes just to sway the vote the way he wants it to go. The amazing thing is, that it often works. A lot of people base their opinions of the performances on what he says. Weird.

I think he has really shitty taste in music too. There is so much he claims to have never even heard before, and he has a weird aversion to any song having to do with birds. I was amazed that he said "Hallelujah" was one of his favorites and that he liked Jeff Buckley. He scored one point there. But then everytime I remember that he is responsible for Il Divo, he loses about 10 points.

Hey, Ryan will say that, because if you look up "Ultimate Tool" in The Dictionary of American Expressions, you will see Ryan's face right next to Nigel Lithgoe's.

People how many times does this have to be repeated: Simon Douchebag Cowell is The King of Mediocre Music, and not just "a judge" on the show, but rather co-owner with Simon Fuller. This is HIS show. He doesn't have Pauler and Randy on because of "don't mess with success," but rather because they're so bad they make HIM look good in comparison! Simon is a douche. pay no attention to him. He's a horrible person.

Having said that, I wish they'd do a Cat Stevens/Yusef Salam night. I present the following youtubes just to remind all of what a GREAT performer is capable of. They won't have a Cat Steven's Night but they should, and given the last five, here's what they should do:

Cat Stevens - Peace Train - David Penis Jr. Cook

Cat Stevens - Another Saturday Night - Carly "Ultimate Plant" Shitson (Amanada would have nailed it)

Cat Stevens - Tuesday's Dead - Brooke No Shit "White"

A Cat Stevens night? Hell, why not a James Taylor night...if you are looking for a thorazine induced stupor. Oh wait, we already get that week in and week out.

I couldn't care less what they do in their "off time". I suspect it would be like watching paint dry with this group. Frankly, I wish they would trim all dialog from the show (mentor clips, judges comments, my most embarassing moment, etc). Damn, I should really use a dvr.

I want to know what kind of singer/performer they will be. If they aren't putting it all (skill and personality) into that one shot each week then they deserve the boot.

Yeah; my family even had a discussion about this a few days ago regarding Mariah Carey's catalog (and past mentors like J.Lo.). Even good singers will get sunk by cookie-cutter pop and tuneless melisma-fests.

If American Idol is plant-y and incredibly contrived (and, oh yes, it is!), it's only a reflection of the larger ClearChannel-saturated environment full of payola & A&R guys. No matter where you go in the country, most of the stations will be playing the same exact drivel because they're controlled by the same people who don't want to take any risks.

There's tons of genuinely good singers and groups out there, as always, but the labels still seem hell-bent on making their own prefab garbage. Then they whine about CD sales going down.

I guess the silver lining of the cloud is that EMI's new owners are working to minimize the A&R men and marketing system in favor of, y'know, going on the internet and finding out what people are listening to.

I am still angling for 'Ramones Night'...(mainly just to see Archie's head asplode) A lot of their stuff from the 70's could be re-arranged and utterly destroyed for Idol...

Cat Stevens/JT night--that would be great! Real music by real singers.

On behind the scenes shows/watching them watch paint dry: this is a fantastic idea as long as the only person they show is Castro. Front and back.

Hey wait a second... I thought this was a SINGING CONTEST?!?!  Now Simon is saying that PERSONALITY MATTERS?!?!

It's almost like he's contradicting his EARLIER LIES!!!  Oh wait, because he is.

Simon coming out and admitting the SHOW SUCKS makes me almost like him.  But then I remember, oh right, these people WERE HAND-PICKED by Randy, Paula and Simon.  They showed their super-secret discussion during the elevator episode, remember?

Heaven forbid Simon ever admit when HE IS WRONG.  If the show sucks it's HIS FAULT.  SCREW YOU, SIMON!!!  QUIT ALREADY!!!  2010 can't come fast enough.  Oh and take Randy and Paula with you.

Yes, BeckEye, I can believe it. You were attracted to Michael Johns, so nothing could shock me at this point.

I too was shocked when Simon said that "Hallelujah" was one of his favorite songs. I don't think I have ever heard that song on the radio or seen a video for it on television. Meanwhile, he's never heard "Crazy On You" by Heart? That song came out in 1976 and gets played to death on classic rock radio on a daily basis. I guess Simon was too old in 1976 to be into that kind of music. What is he, 60 now?
