Parents' Television Council is Angry at the Idol Finale

The idiots at the Parents' Television Council are mad about the Idol finale. What was there to be mad about? It was one of the more entertaining episodes of Idol in years. Apparently the PTC is angry that Kara DioGaurdi took her dress off, Bikini Girl made an appearance, and the Black Eyed Peas performed a song with swear words in it. Oh... we get it. They've gone blind because they saw Kara's nasty body, deaf because they listened to the Black Eyed Peads perform, and envious after seeing Katrina's new boobs. Yeah, we can see those points. Or they're just homely old shrews who need to get a life. One or the other.

Dixie: when you go to the beach (if you've ever been) do you wear a hood over your head, or do you go to places where women where those Victorian one-piece swimsuits? Last time I went nearly every woman was wearing a Bikini (including some who really should not have) and there were lots of kids running around and nobody really cared. The fact you found this offensive says more about you than it does about the show.

Haha. I love how sheltered they want everyone to be. Brings back good memories... like when my mom let me watch Saving Private Ryan when I was 9 or when Law and Order taught me what rape was. And I turned out okay ...mostly.

Remember "Laugh In"? That's right! Goldie Hawn was the original Bikini Girl. Loved that show.

Honestly, the prudes give me lulz.

Holes in Dixie Dawg's logic:

FAIL #1 - "... an American Idol finale that... looks as though it was produced by Larry Flint or Hugh Hefner"

Have you ever looked at a Hustler or a Playboy? Thought not. Those magazines show nudity (breasts, buttocks, and vaginas). A bikini does not equal nudity. If you have ever worn a bikini to a public swimming pool or to the beach, than you must have also "received advice from satan," by your logic.

FAIL #2 - "Ryan Seacrest takes his 'shot' at Bikini Girl, basically announcing her chest enhancement."

What Ryan said was, "I'd ask you what's new, but I think I already know." Yes, we all knew what he was talking about, but it was actually a relatively clean and subtle jab that most kids under twelve probably wouldn't understand. It's not like he said, "Holy crap, you got some new tiggle biddies! I'd like to motorboat them sonsabitches with my mouf!"

FAIL #3 - "... the Fergie and Black-Eyed Peas segment felt like a concert for a Drug Dealer Convention in the ghetto."

I admittedly wasn't paying that much attention to the lyrics because the BEP are the worst group out there right now, but I didn't hear anything referencing drugs or the ghetto. It was just rap music. Shitty rap music, but rap music all the same. Your comment seems to say more about you and your perceptions of the people who perform rap music. Are all rappers drug dealers from the ghetto to you? Or all all black people drug dealers from the ghetto? Which is it?

FAIL #4 - "The finale was... an insult to intelligence."

Duh. You're watching American Idol. Nothing about this show screams out "intelligence." But then again, neither do your comments, so I can understand how you would have a hard time identifying it.

FAIL #5 - "... the incredible guitar licks of Carlos Santana and the sing-along memorable song of Rod Stewart... "

Speaks for itself.

FAIL #6 - "God gave people brains."

6000 years ago, right?

I'm the furthest thing from a Moral Majority Christian (I abhor religion of any kind), but I still thought the finale was tacky, which is to say it was gaudy and lacking in style or good taste. But of course I loved it in a VFTW way for that very reason.

Scott:

I'm not an apologist for Dixie, but I think what they were trying to say was that the show, having such a lofty position in pop culture, could be a litle more socially responsible and have a little more redeeming value than it does. That's all. At least that's how I feel. And we all know it's not PBS or Masterpiece Theatre, but that was a little beyond the pale even for me. Good response though.

Great rebuttals Baio! Love your posts (does that count as tarding a Worster?). Dixie Dawg is a reminder of the curse of our Puritan heritage--fuckboobed uptightness.

I agree with some of the posters that this was actually the best AI show of the season and that ain't sayin' much. Of course everything having to do with Kara and especially the gawdawful "coronation" song sucked the big weenie.

Thankfully this season is over and who really gives a crap who won? They'll both have big juicy contracts and either fail or disappear into obscurity.

Dixie Dawg is right. It's not about being prudish. (And to the commenter with the beach question, I do wear a bikini to the beach....) The issue is that AI is marketed as a family-friendly program. The entire season has been bordering on inappropriate for the audience that is it geared toward. I think AI is trying too hard to push the envelope, and it's getting old.... All the Seacrest-Simon sexual innuendos and comments...come on now. It's not even entertaining to watch.

Oh yeah. And the Black Eyed Peas were censored during their finale performance because one of their lyrics contained the word "fagg*t" (Idol obviously knew about it). I can't imagine that sits well with many of the members of this web site, not to mention its founder. Why is Idol being defended so much? I thought we hated Idol. This is a great chance to bash the fuck out of them and they're getting a free pass. What gives?
