The mom looks like she eats half of the food by herself so, yeah, maybe it's not easy. Remember 8 of those people are little kids and they're on assistance which means they get FREE breakfast and lunch at school. The mom probably sells the food stamps to get money for the piercings all over her face.

If they "took on" his five kids, there might also be child support coming in from the other parent. I notice she has brand name groceries, where she could buy store brands. And if she wasn't giving them expensive, sugary drinks with their meal, she could afford jelly.

I appreciate that the mother is in college trying to better herself. But maybe she needs a part time job in addition to college to raise some extra funds for food.

Additionaly, $4.50 per day for a person isn't much. But when you combine everybodies food allotment together you get some economy of scale. Buy in bulk, don't buy name brand and I have a feeling you could get better food than you think you can.
