Kyle Sandilands returns to television

February 4, 2010 - 8:31AM

Kyle Sandilands is returning to television as a judge on the Seven Network talent show Australia's Got Talent.

Rumours of the deal have been circulating in the television industry for the last two weeks.

Sandilands confirmed the deal this morning on his 2Day FM breakfast radio show .

Australia's Got Talent is four years old, having started on Seven in 2007. It is hosted by Grant Denyer and featured Dannii Minogue, Tom Burlinson and Red Symons as judges.

Seven's hiring of Sandilands is part of a broader revamp of the show. Of the three original judges, only Minogue is certain to return for the fourth series at this point. It is believed Sandilands will replace Burlinson.

"I want to thank Channel Seven for having the balls for putting me on there," Sandilands said this morning.

The deal will mark Sandilands's return to television after he was sacked by Ten from Australian Idol during the fallout from a radio stunt which went wrong last year.

It is understood Seven is revamping Australia's Got Talent to capitalise on the fact Australian Idol is almost certain to be kept off air in 2010 so Ten can make changes to its line-up.

Sources say Seven feels that has created a gap in the market and wants to dial up the volume on Australia's Got Talent.

The show is based on Britain's Got Talent, which is noteworthy because it discovered a number of extraordinary talents, including Paul Potts and Susan Boyle.

Australian Idol could be facing chop as key staff jump ship to Australia's Got Talent

AUSTRALIAN Idol - once one of the nation's best-loved shows - could be facing the chop.

Production company FremantleMedia has allowed the show's executive producers Greg Beness and Suzanne Mitchell to switch to Channel Seven's Australia's Got Talent, which it also produces.

Former Idol judge Kyle Sandilands and pop star Brian McFadden have also recently joined Talent, which Seven is to promote heavily on the back of the huge success of the UK franchise with Susan Boyle.

Idol was a regular ratings winner for Ten after starting in 2003, launching Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll and Jessica Mauboy to stardom. But last year's series was a huge disappointment.

Presenter James Mathison and musical director John Foreman left and Sandilands was sacked. His replacement - Sony executive Jay Dee Springbett - was roundly lambasted for his lack of charisma.

A Ten spokesman was non-commital about the future of the show: "No decisions have been made and we're still in talks with FremantleMedia."

But Ten sources are admitting privately it is increasingly unlikely the show will survive this year.

Last year, auditions for Idol started in March.

Beness had been with Idol since it started and was instrumental in its success.

It is believed FremantleMedia transferred Beness and Mitchell to Talent because the fate of Idol was in limbo.

The "winner" from the final season is finally releasing his album

And suffers from the common delusion that being on a reality show is soooo much hard work and totes like real musicians who work their butts off for years rolleyes

Quote :
As for the perception Idol winners have not paid their dues, he is similarly abrasive.

''There is a misconception of what actually happens,'' he said. ''A lot of musicians don't like Idol because they think you haven't worked hard enough to get there. But the truth is, it's harder for us because we have to go through what those musicians go through all in the space of a year.

''It's 24/7: emotionally and physically draining. Your world changes instantly and then after it, you're expected to prove [yourself] even more. I'm not ashamed of [Idol]. If anything, I'm really proud of where I came from.''

Good grief. That's like saying that some clown who got to be company CEO in a year worked harder than someone who took 25 years to achieve it. What a fuckwad. I have about 300 musician friends on myspace who would gauge his eyes out and lick the wound for saying that.
