Because your link for a picture is not a valid internet address. You'll need to host your picture online first (such as at photobucket.com) and then link to it there for it to show up.

thanks Dave another question. I want to put pictures in my sig, but there's a 200 character limit and each URL is like 50 "characters" long. SLH has like 7 in his. how would I be able to more than 3 in?? I'm technologically challenged

There's one like tinypic.com or something that makes a really short link for hosted pictures.

thanks Dave for all the assistance. something else i can't figure out is posting a link to another website etc. without posting the whole URL. Intead of a URL , I want to sub it in with a word how do I do this?

Lynn, make sure you're viewing the forum through this link: http://www.votefortheworst.com/forum/index.php When you begin viewing the board using the above link, click on your profile and it will take you to the main site where you can change your avatar.

I have options to change e-mail, password, Theme, PM settings, comment settings, and locale settings, but I don't see anything about avatars.

Go into edit your profile and then pick the tab "forum"; it should be there. Lemme know if you can view the forum tab and if it works.
