The Golars are supposedly from South Mountain in the Annapolis Valley. They were near Kentville and New Minas and the real crime is that they actually are a family of inbred retards and everyone in the province knew about it, yet nobody did anything. Also, any pedophile in travelling distance knew where he could go to get some and they still did nothing. When I say retards, I really mean retards that have iqs around 70.

Anyway, the houses on South Mountain look quite pleasant and well kept. I was recently in New Brunswick and I saw countless mobile homes that were up on blocks to make room for sleeping pigs underneath. That was in a place called Geary.

^ None taken. I?ve only ever ventured near Geary once. I think it?s between Fredericton and Oromocto. The homes on the old shortcut between Fredericton and Moncton are much funnier. The lawn ornament collections are priceless.

Even better, some of the rural homes lining highways have no front steps, just doors halfway up the face of split-level homes. I was told it had something to do with a property tax loophole. I wonder if they nail the doors shut to prevent accidents?

The entire Goler episode was sad. I went to school in the Annapolis Valley (it was somewhere between New Minas and Kentville where I was introduced to one of the family) and heard most of the history. It?s amazing how long that was permitted to happen. I think one of the girls finally stepped forward and prompted overdue action.

Canada has a relatively short farming season, yet there are regions that specialize in certain produce and fruits. In New Brunswick, it?s potatoes. At harvest time, it was tradition for the schools to close so that kids could (theoretically) help their parents and/or earn some money at a large potato farm for a few weeks.

In the Annapolis Valley (Nova Scotia) apples are the big crop. U-picks are orchards (or also berry fields) where the public can come and fill their own containers with apples, strawberries, blueberries, etc?This is cheaper than purchasing at the store, but the catch is you have to spend the day picking everything yourself. In a field.

These same u-pick operations often also hire outsiders (mainly students) to fill the crates for shipments. I did this once at the aforementioned apple orchard (many students from a the nearby university tried it once. Note I said once.). Apples from the ground go in one crate, fresh picks from the trees in another. After 8 hours work, my friends and me were able to split our money. Less than $20 apiece. Unless you love physical labour or are an expert apple-picker NOT worth it.

Thank you for the explanation! Australia has crops growing all year round, thanks to our very diverse range of temperatures all over. Up in northern Victoria (my state) we have lots of fruit growing areas, and lots of (poor or tiny budget) backpackers go up there and spend a season picking fruit. Back-breaking work, that is. Grape picking is even worse as you're bending over to do that.

If you go into regional Australia, you'll find farmers selling their produce direct to public via little sheds and rooms at the front of their farms, by the road. No picking required - they have their produce in buckets Much easier! But I think there's a strawberry farm or two who has a consumer pick system.
