I received a few tips this week telling me that Canadian Idol is a done deal. There won't be a season 7.

Maybe that's why Zack was able to come on our radio show. Laugh

But yeah, it's gone for good, or so I hear.

I read on the scaryboard they were signed up until CI8.

One of the main reasons why Canadian Idol was never cancelled before despite sagging ratings and poor winner record sales was that I am pretty sure Canadian channels are required by law to have a certain amount of Canadian content on them per year. Canadian Idol filled up a lot of this time over the years and there wasn't anything to replace it.

This year CTV has two replacements. One is So You Think You Can Dance Canada, which takes up almost the same amount of time as CI and apparently was very successful. The other is Canada's Next Top Model (hosted by Jay Manuel), which CTV just bought from CityTV for the third season. It is set to air in the summer around the same time CI would start.

I'm not sure if another network would be able to take CI because CTV also airs AI. The other major network in Canada is Global, which just acquired Project Runway Canada (hosted by Iman).

I had heard that CI7 would be the last season, so I'm going to wait until an official announcement.

Maybe it's done with CTV, but another network picked it up

Wait, I thought Myst posted something saying it was renewed.

Let me find it.

FREMANTLEMEDIA ENTERPRISES AND INSIGHT PRODUCTIONS STRIKE DEVELOPMENT DEAL

- Reciprocal First Look Agreement Extended

Posted 07 Oct 2008

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and Insight Production Company Ltd. today announce an overall development financing deal between the two companies which also extends their current first look agreement. The first look agreement brokered in 2006 will increase in dimension as the companies begin to concentrate on co-funding the development of new projects.

The agreement was brokered by Jeff Tahler FME VP Acquisitions Americas, Lisa Honig FME VP Program Distribution North America and Jane Rimer, International Creative &;; Business Development for Insight. Offering FME a first look at distributing Insight?s projects and Insight the first option for the Canadian market for new FremantleMedia formats, the agreement has seen the companies work together closely on local versions of the highly successful Canadian Idol and the Emmy-nominated fashion reality series developed by Miramax and The Weinstein Company, Project Runway Canada. FME is to launch The Jon Dore Television Show (26 x 30?), an Insight production, in association with The Comedy Network, for international sale at MIPCOM 2008.

The pooled development resources, together with a focus on seeking out co-venture opportunities, are expected to drive the creation of new scripted and non-scripted content. A number of new projects are already underway as a result of the collaboration of these two major global players.

Jeff Tahler, FME VP Acquisitions and Development Americas, commented: ?Having worked closely with Insight in recent years, the quality of their programming slate and understanding of the global TV market has become increasingly apparent. We quickly realised that it was in both companies? best interests to expand our current relationship to become involved with their projects at an even earlier stage.?

David Ellender, CEO, FremantleMedia Enterprises, commented: ?Insight is a very valued partner to FME. We are extremely happy to continue working with them in close proximity and are excited to see the fruits of this extension to our relationship.?

John Brunton, President and CEO of Insight Production Company Ltd., added: ?Our first look agreement with David Ellender and his talented team at FME has resulted in some tremendous successes both in Canada and abroad. The addition of this significant development fund will open entirely new opportunities to create exciting new content.?

?Insight and FME have proved to be a perfect fit. In a short period of time, we have created hour upon hour of engaging programming that resonates with Canadian viewers,? said Barbara Bowlby, EVP of Insight Productions.

Insight Productions has the rights for two more years, but it's a year to year renewal by CTV.

I hope this is not true, like the whole "Paula leaving" PR mess.

well friends after 6 years the economy has come crashing down on idol. strange that ctv has sponsers for a show on which we watch american kids seek fame and fortune by singing but not enuff sponsers for our own. still the number one show in the market we have been put on "rest" status. i kow things are brutal out there in the market but one would assume that canadians need this show now more than ever. at its base idol is about dr4eams of the future and our sense of who we are as canadians and our one-ness in our aspirations from coast to coast. we have broken down so many barriers making newfies household names in bc and albertans household names in quebec. we have made unknown judges celebrities and launched careers for jacob hoggard to stephie d (now on broadway) to tara oram and on and on...shame on us that its gone for now...facebook protest anyone?

Well holy crap. Paula That really sucks but, well, whatever. Stuck with the shitfest called AI and I'll only watch that now because of you guys. As for the 'replacement' canadian content - good gawd. You just can't get any more entertaining than that. Watching too-skinny, back-stabbing, conniving chicks vying for a silly title and people dancing-off for the same reason. Apparently, as an average Canadian, this is why I watch tv.

I should be fine. I just sharpened the knives that I found in the kitchen. Hopefully they come to good use ;) Of course I'm alright! It sucks but nothing really can happen. I've made a facebook group and I hope you all join.

I don't use Facebook.

So, now what do we do? What can we do? Grassroots letter writing to show that the show has viewers? Mind you, would they care that non revenue raising viewers from outside Canada love the show?

*sulks* Whatevia I WANT MY CI!

I think we need to be talking to insight productions and see what we can do to make it happen. I'm sure they want it just as much as we all do! I just know that it's sponsering issues.

Theo's thong bombing didn't help.

What about the ratings for last season, weren't they ok? It wasn't like the ratings had dropped the show into the least watched show ever, right?
