As for British equivalents, there are too many... most recently The MacDonald Brothers, who got lots of "would you like fries with that?" jokes, but no-one has come close to Chico, not even Sanjaya, dare I say it... This former stripper and goatherder knew he couldn't sing but managed to come third anyway, thanks to his so-bad-they-were-in-fact-genius performances:

Shame there are no clips of his renditions of D'ya Think I'm Sexy, or The Timewarp but that second clip does feature one of his creepy "Chicettes"
Over here the worst contestants often get to make a career out of their crapness, and one of them is now dating one of our MPs- hopefully Sanjaya will manage it too:

Love the male hairslides look he's rocking too. He's in the final six now and apparently he's never been in the bottom three, presumably because the French voters recognise his greatness. Come on Julien...
Edit: Just noticed the DIG UP ELVIS badge and little stickers on his ukelele, I LOVE this guy. If you do a youtube search you can find his audition where he appears to be singing a rude song (in English) with his ukelele- not sure if it's rude, I can't make out all the words. Clearly the French censors aren't as harsh as the US ones. |

Love this one too, he's a performer as well as a true VFTW-style singer.
Was looking for his audition clip but it seems to have been taken down. Enough clips anyway- just typing "Julien Idol" into the YouTube search throws up an instant comedy goldmine. Until they all get taken down... shame, I need to hear that Parisian lounge-lizard version of Creep again

French Idol is the most amusingly campy Idol I've seen yet, and I've seen CI and Swedish Idol.
This is the one Sanjaya would have won - but not in the same season as Julien.
Or maybe they should rename it "Nouvelle VFTW" |

Oh my god, he did Strangers In The Night... Love the French pronounciation and random swearing.
Good point sfv, in the UK Pop Idol/The X Factor are seen as amusing crapfests rather than serious talent contests and the viewers seem to "get it" the way people on VFTW do- we tend to vote for the worst anyway, without any prompting. This is how people like Chico and Darius Danesh make it into our finals. It is also why our Eurovision song contest entry is usually something cheesy and crap and very, very camp.
I think the French have the same idea. Sanjaya would have done well in the UK, Chris Sligh would probably have gone quite far too.
Just had a look for Darius's unique version of Baby One More Time and can't see it up anywhere- can anyone find a video? |
