Are you allowed to keep squirrels as pets, or are they protected or classified as wild animals?

As I was saying in Smartie's thread, a squirrel followed me back to my dorm today because I was carrying a sammach. The squirrels on my campus are FEARLESS. If you try to chase them they'll come right back at you. Demonic little bastards. Laugh

Squirrels get nasty. I had to collect the caged squirrels from between the walls every morning for a week in the aforementioned squirrel-invaded house. They may be tiny but they're fighters with attitude. They bumped around enough in the cage to move it across the floor.

The grey ones can be larger - some of the males I found waiting to be freed down by the river [ the landlord's chosen new home for the invaders ] were bigger than a very small cat [ they could take on a kitten and win, easy ].

Not my picture, so I don't know how well this will work. Even here, this guy's no match for the well-fed giants roaming the streets. When I first saw them at school, I couldn't believe the size. We had nothing like that where I came from. They were like fuzzy sewer rats.

Grey squirrels are bigger and meaner than thier little red buddies or chipmunks [ also common but nowhere near the squirrel numbers ].

Squirrels are rats with bushy tails.

My dog AND my cat loves to chase them up the tree.

But Deb, pet rats are fun!

Will a squirrel harm a dog if cornered?

Possibly, but they can crawl up anything and get away.

We have black squirrels, too. They're smaller than the gray ones and usually hang out in our town square.

Here's a pretty one smartie.

Here's the place we went camping. South Twin Lake in Central Oregon. There were thousands of the little suckers there. It's all pine forest and they were getting the seeds in the trees out of the pine cones and dropping the cones down like grenades on the campers!

The squirrels that inhabit our yard particularly love the big walnut tree which overlooks the driveway. When the dogs chase them out of the garden and up that tree, they retort by throwing these walnut bombs at the dogs. Those suckers are hard, and they hurt! It's like a warzone. dogs are infantry, Squirrels are the air force. They have a good vantage point from the tree and can hit almost anything.

And of course I am unable to park anywhere near there because of the body damage those suckers will do to my car when they are lobbed from 100 feet in the air.

Damn Squirrels. Damn!

I learned quickly on the trip to sit my chair away from the trees. They are real tall and the cones gathered a lot of speed.

I think in squirrel talk they were chirping, "Incoming!!!"

We're being so hard on the squirrels and neglecting the antics of thier chipmunk cousins. Once, one of those furballs climbed in my open bedroom window and made his way to the bathroom. I found him in the sink and he had a look on his face like he was planning on nesting there.

I put the little guy back out - I'd rather no uninvited rodent guests - but he was so cute and easily caught. He certainly had none of the squirrel bravado, yet neither of the two cats moved a paw to chase him [ Either the two most cowardly or the two laziest cats alive. ].

Now the chipmunks in the parks? They're a whole other breed. They challenge the dogs for handouts from people. No fear whatsoever.

I dunno but I doubt she cares as they live in very rural Vermont and she's always had a special affinity with animals (she also has two cats, a dog, an iguana, and a turtle).

My link sucks but it was actually a picture of a racoon. They're the buggers that excel in theft. They're also common in California however, don't be fooled. Inside those cute little furry bodies beats a larcenous and fierce heart. A treed boar coon can make mince-meat of most dogs.

Well holy crap! Platoons of squirrels and chipmunks and racoons.....it's a wonder you guys go outside!

Makes me glad our possums merely use our roof to run around on at night, and kangaroos live way away from here!

I used to be obsessed with Australian animals like Kangaroos and Koala Bears.

And still am.

Wow, I'm too gay for my own good. Laugh

Just don't call them koala bears - they're not bears :)

And they're angry little grumpy bastards who will scratch, bite and piss on you. Laugh
