Clap Clap Clap Syesha!!!! She's my favorite of all the girls. I'm pretty stoked she made it. Even though she's yet another plant and a Reality Show re-tread, she sucks in a most VFTW-worthy way.

Moved over from the Spoiler thread:

The daughter of a Motown back-up singer, 19-year-old Syesha Mercado discovered her love for singing in her church choir. Driven by her passion for both song and dance, the Sarasota, FL, native attended the middle school, and then high school for the performing arts

She was already a contestant on The One, an even crappier competitor to AI on ABC that nobody watched.

Here she is singing "Chay-yay-yay-yain of Fools"

Clap Clap Clap

Here she is in a Low-Rent Card-free Calling Commercial.

Theatre student performs on reality show

Following in the foot steps of FIU alumna Nadia Turner, FIU theatre student Syesha Mercado, a sophomore, is one of 11 finalists vying for a recording contract in ABC's new reality show, "The One: Making of a Music Star." The 10-week series encourages viewers to call in and vote for their favorite finalists after weekly live performances every Tuesday at 9 p.m. in front of a studio audience and a panel of judges. The weekly results shows will air live on Wednesdays from 10-11 p.m.

She's been singing for a while. From 1997:

While he fished, Syesha Mercado, a 10-year-old student at Daughtrey Elementary School, delivered a stirring rendition of the national anthem. When she got to the "land of the free and home of the brave" part, the crowd went nuts.

THE ONE: MAKING A MUSIC STAR WILL PREMIERE JULY 18 AND THE FIRST RESULTS SHOW PREMIERES JULY 19 ON ABC

Go Behind-the-Scenes to See Eleven Talented Performers Share the Opportunity of a Lifetime As They Learn From Successful Music Business Professionals - While Competing for a Major Recording Contract

Every singer has a dream -- and for the eleven contestants attending a state-of-the-art music academy in Los Angeles on the new series, The One: Making a Music Star, they will now be one step closer to stardom, training with some of the most well-respected music industry professionals as they compete for a major recording contract. Based on Operación Triunfo, the smash hit and critically-acclaimed Spanish Endemol series, The One: Making a Music Star premieres LIVE on TUESDAY, JULY 18 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET), with the LIVE results show to air the following night, WEDNESDAY, JULY 19 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

For the first time, viewers will have an exclusive VIP pass to an intimate and dramatic look at a select group of up and coming singers who will learn what it really takes to be a recording star. These singers will be on camera 24/7, providing a real-life soap opera as they live and learn together. And behind the scenes, viewers will have access to all of the drama between the contestants -- including romances, rivalries and more.

To prepare for their live performances, the contestants will train with an artist development team. This group of top-notch professionals will provide invaluable instruction in vocal coaching, choreography, image consulting, fitness training and more.

The long hours of training, practices and rehearsals will lead up to a weekly live performance, where the group of singers will perform a song within their genre. They will use all that they have learned earlier in the week from the artist development team and face the immense pressures and anxieties of performing live in front of an audience.

On every Tuesday performance show, the contestants sing live in front of America and a studio audience. Throughout the show, viewers will also get a first-hand look at the behind-the-scenes drama of the contestants, as they live together and train with the artist development team. Immediately following this performance, America can vote for their favorite contestant by phoning in, text messaging or voting online at abc.com.

The outcome will be announced during a results show which will be televised the following evening, with one contestant being eliminated each week. The One: Making a Music Star results show premieres on WEDNESDAY, JULY 19 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET). Emotions will be high and drama is certain to ensue, as the Experts and contestants get to save two of the bottom three from elimination.

After 10 weeks and 20 episodes, the eventual winner will receive a recording contract with Interscope/Geffen/A&M Label Group, a leader in the music industry and home to such diverse talent as Black Eyed Peas, Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Eminem, Nelly Furtado, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Sting and U2.

The One: Making a Music Star is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. David Goldberg is the President of Endemol USA. The series is executive produced by Matt Kunitz, and will air with Spanish subtitles via secondary closed captioning.

Endemol is the Dutch company behind Big Brother.

A comment on one of her performances on the show:

Quote:
Syesha Mercado, Sarasota, FL - "If I Ain't Got You" (Alicia Keys)
Comments: Okay, maybe the cutest one didn't leave last week. She looks absolutely darling as a young Whitney Houston imitation. She wanted her week-two performance to be completely different, more earthy and organic. It is, and we're all so much better for it.

Quote:
Syesha Mercado, Sarasota, FL - "Chain Of Fools" (Aretha Franklin)
Comments: Faith is a big deal to her, a point that is hammered home so much so that every single person spouts clichés after her performance (i.e. the host cries out "Lord have mercy!") I'm not sure where this is going, and I'm hoping it's not a setup for later mocking. Her loud vocals were strong; her quiet vocal were indecipherable.

Another article about her on The One:

Quote:
Assessing the other judges, dubbed "experts", Mark Hudson still came across as more concerned with what he was wearing, donning new eyeglasses, matching berets and much jewelry in each scene. I am still mystified about Andre' Harrell, with his background, I had expected honesty and true critiques. He did make Syesha Mercado cry when coaching her singing, to "sing to the children". Faith and children play a big role in Syesha's life, and his comment inspired her this week.
--

Syesha Mercado looked beautiful and sang like an angel atop the black piano. I could have done without Mark Hudson's displaying his heart vest. Way too extreme with the outfits, Mark.

'The One' was one of the biggest fiascos in the history of reality TV. The first episode was the lowest-rated adults 18-49 debut for a reality show in modern TV history and was cancelled after four shows (they did two per week, so it actually only lasted two weeks). This one had everything - a Hudson brother as a judge, the cheesiest group numbers evah, and a bunch of talentless hacks who were the only people who seemed to take this mess seriously.

Of all the contestants, only two stood out for me - Syesha and another dude whose name I can't remember. I was actually glad to see that Syesha had made the cut on Idol. She has a kind of Nadia Turner vibe, which isn't necessarily a good thing, but we'll see.

Out of what we have left, she may be a possibility. I can certainly see her telling Simon where to stick it.

And she's a local girl.

At least she's not a blonde. We'll be able to tell her apart from the Stepford contestants.

Despite her plantiness (though seemingly one of the less planty of the plants), Syesha could prove to be one of the most interesting girls in the bunch. May sing a little too well for us to vote for in the early rounds.

She's the only one of the females that we haven't been talking about much that I actually remember.

The clip of her singing "Chain of Fools" sounded almost exactly like Vonzell when she sang it, aside from a few minor differences.

She'll probably make Top 12 just because she stands out from all the blonde bimbos, even if her singing(at this point) is equally bland.

She did a beer commercial in Nigeria. Smartie linked to it up there. It's a classic beer commercial: good looking, young, healthy, well-dressed, happy people all enjoy a beer.

I don't think her being on The One necessarily means she totally sucks (although most of the people on it did). She saw an opportunity and couldn't have know what a crapfest the show would turn out to be.

I was recapping this show for RNO. Couldn't remember what my reaction was, so went into my archives to see what I wrote about Syesha at the time:

Syesha Mercado is next, and tells us that she started singing in church. Faith is very important to her and she’s brought her bible along with her. She knows that if she has faith in herself, she can do anything. I like her attitude. Andre does as well. She calls music a form of therapy.

Syesha is tackling Aretha’s “Chain of Fools.” I am thinking very, very lounge-y. She’s the best so far, but that really isn’t saying much. She does, however, have a great tone to her voice, and some nice moves for a church girl. Plus she looks pretty hot in her black and white striped dress and black leather boots.

Andre advises her not to be too theatrical. He thinks she started out shaky, but by the time she got to the end it was a “soul thing.” Kara says it was too theatrical, and that she wants to feel connected and intimate. Mark says, “You can make a rock 'n roller like me testify.” Gag me.
