Big Changes in Store for American Idol 8

MJ's Big Blog snatched an internal Fox memo that spoiled some big changes for American Idol 8. What does that mean for us?

  • There will ony be 3 weeks of auditions. Yay! The auditions are lame and boring. The memo also promises more 'aspirational' singers and less bad singers. Fine with us, the ones we can't vote for are boring anyway. There will also be 2 weeks of Hollywood. That's usually pretty entertaining.
  • There will be a top 36 instead of a top 24. Idol will also only be on 2 nights a week every week. Also, the wild card is coming back. This seems like bad thing, because it probably means that we're going back to the way semifinal voting worked during seasons 1-3: we vote people IN to the top 12. This means only the top 2 or 3 vote getters continue on and everyone else goes home. While it means that our favorites probably won't make the top 12, it does ensure that people who have one good performance and then suck will make up most of the top 12, as that's what happened in the first few seasons. This will be a delayed VFTW Victory, and most of the top 12 will be awful!
  • There will be no Idol Gives Head. Thank God.

Well two out of three is okay. But damn, if American Idol is bringing back that version of the semi-finals then the same thing will happen to Canadian Idol which means two shows with less victories....shit

But at least we don't have to deal with that mid-season crapfest!

I didn't watch until Season 5 either =P.

However, I know about that BS. But what if it's not the same as it used to be? I wonder if they changed it up a bit....In fact, maybe it won't be a Top 12, but a Top 16 or something....

Perhaps there will be 3 groups of 12: 6/6 guy/girl split.

The TOP 3/4 are automatically sent on to the Top 12/16.

The BOTTOM 3/4 are instantly eliminated.

The MIDDLE 3/4 advance to the Wild Card round.

From the 3 groups, we'll either have 9 or 12 at this point. Then, the Wild Card group will have the same amount.

If it's a Top 12, then I'm not sure how it'd work. I think either the judges, public, and producer each get one pick or the 2 highest public vote-receivers advance and the judges pick a 3rd. I dunno.

If it's a Top 16, it easily makes more sense. The 12 Wild Cards will be narrowed down to 8 with the four lowest vote obtainers being cut. Then out of the remaining 8, each of the four judges make a selection.

It could really go either way....And hopefully we can vote for enough sucky people on the regular nights NOT to have to worry about any Wild Card BS =).

But if Idol doesn't give head, corporations have no incentive to relieve global poverty, etc etc. Ryan Seacrest is like Bono. Except without glasses. Or talent.

Speaking of corporations, if the Feds bailout Ford, does that mean the government be making the shitty music videos? Actually, this is something government might do better than the private sector...
