Faith Builders International Ministries... Article Alleges That It's a Shady Place

The church that Danny Gokey attends, Faith Builders International Ministries, seems to be an interesting place. TopIdol posted an article based around testimony from a former member who outlines some shady behavior at the church. It's an interesting read. Among other things cited, the former member alleges that the lead pastor Jeff Pruitt drives an Escalade that he guilted the church into paid for, that the church is close to a cult in their opinion, and that Danny was a smug jerk to the other musicians. The article does say that Danny's wife, Sophie, was a really nice person though. So check it out, read up, and form your own opinions if you'd like.

Any 'church' that practices prosperity gospel and churns through members in order to profit, needs to be investigated thoroughly. As does Gokey's shonky foundation.

I've done research on cults, and that place meets all the criteria of being a cult. Can this season get any better???

What amazes me is that church members packed up and moved from Wisconsin to Arizona to follow the church's leader, Jerry Pruitt. That is a major undertaking to change jobs, schools, homes, and move one's family across country, just to be part of a congregation. I hope even more people come forward with their stories about this church.

As a Wisconsinite and former Rock County resident, I'd just like to say that we're not all freaks like this. I had never actually heard of this "church" until Gokey got it exposure.

Does anyone know if Jamar is a member? If not, how/why did he and Gokey become friends? Was he trying to save his soul or something?? (Doesn't seem like Jamar has deep pockets....)

Congrats to Danny Gokey &; Jamar Rogers!

Well, finally its out! Yes, Danny Gokey and Jamar Rogers have made it on to American Idol. The whole nation is talking about it. As most of you know, Danny and Jamar sing on our praise and worship team. Danny was actually our praise and worship leader for years in both our Milwaukee and Beloit locations. Danny made all the rehearsals as well, until his precious wife Sophie went to be with the Lord! Danny needed to take a break for a season to heal. But, it didnt take long before he was back on the front line singing again! Jamar has been singing on the team for some time as well. Jamar has a tremendous story of Gods healing power. He was completely healed of cancer. Wow, how awesome God is! These two men are not just apart of our church, but apart of our family! They both call me there spiritual father. Im honored to say the least. They are two of the most humble, sincere people, that you will ever meet. They are the real deal! We are so very proud of them and wish them the very best in where this journey is taking them. But, beyond the lights, beyond the applause and beyond the fanfare they are STARS to me and our church family! We love them very much...touch the world guys, God has given you the platform! -Pastor Pruitt

Well if this is true, that seals the deal I guess &; explains how they knew each other. We had two cult members. At least we are down to just one now...

And was I not paying attention, or was Jamar's "I had cancer" sob story just not mentioned on idol? Didn't he know a good sob story gets you farther than talent?

Wow. This whole sordid affair just gets creepier and creepier. I think I read on here that they went to the wife's grave site and tried to raise her from the dead or something. Yeah, that's normal. I thought Mormons (Gaspy) were whack jobs, but this outfit takes the cake.

From http://www.factnet.org/headlines/destructive_cult_warning_signs.html

Ask yourself if the following criteria apply to the group you are concerned about.

A destructive cult tends to be totalitarian in its control of its members' behavior. Cults are likely to dictate in great detail not only what members believe, but also what members wear and eat, when and where members work, sleep, and bathe, and how members think, speak, and conduct familial, marital, or sexual relationships.

A destructive cult tends to have an ethical double standard. Members are urged to be obedient to the cult, to carefully follow cult rules. They are also encouraged to be revealing and open in the group, confessing all to the leaders. On the other hand, outside the group they are encouraged to act unethically, manipulating outsiders or nonmembers, and either deceiving them or simply revealing very little about themselves or the group. In contrast to destructive cults, honorable groups teach members to abide by one set of ethics and act ethically and truthfully to all people in all situations.

A destructive cult has only two basic purposes: recruiting new members and fund-raising. Altruistic movements, established religions, and other honorable groups also recruit and raise funds. However, these actions are incidental to an honorable group's main purpose of improving the lives of its members and of humankind in general. Destructive cults may claim to make social contributions, but in actuality such claims are superficial and only serve as gestures or fronts for recruiting and fund-raising. A cult's real goal is to increase the prestige and often the wealth of the leader.

A destructive cult appears to be innovative and exclusive. The leader claims to be breaking with tradition, offering something novel, and instituting the ONLY viable system for change that will solve life's problems or the world's ills. But these claims are empty and only used to recruit members who are then surreptitiously subjected to mind control to inhibit their ability to examine the actual validity of the claims of the leader and the cult.

A destructive cult is authoritarian in its power structure. The leader is regarded as the supreme authority. He or she may delegate certain power to a few subordinates for the purpose of seeing that members adhere to the leader's wishes. There is no appeal outside his or her system to a greater system of justice. For example, if a schoolteacher feels unjustly treated by a principal, an appeal can be made to the superintendent. In a destructive cult, the leader claims to have the only and final ruling on all matters.

A destructive cult's leader is a self-appointed messianic person claiming to have a special mission in life. For example, leaders of flying saucer cults claim that beings from outer space have commissioned them to lead people away from Earth, so that only the leaders can save them from impending doom.

A destructive cult's leader centers the veneration of members upon himself or herself. Priests, rabbis, ministers, democratic leaders, and other leaders of genuinely altruistic movements focus the veneration of adherents on God or a set of ethical principles. Cult leaders, in contrast, keep the focus of love, devotion, and allegiance on themselves.

A destructive cult's leader tends to be determined, domineering, and charismatic. Such a leader effectively persuades followers to abandon or alter their families, friends, and careers to follow the cult. The leader then takes control over followers' possessions, money, time, and lives.

___________

Which of these does Gokey's group meet? I say most.

You only have to look back at "pastor" Jim Jones &; the mass suicide of his followers in the Jonestown Massacre to understand the effect that one charismatic individual can have on a crowd of susceptible followers
