For the next two weeks, we're teaming with AOL Television to name the 10 worst 'American Idol' semifinalists ever. Here's our pick for #7. Check AOL Television tomorrow for the pick at #6. We'll be switching back and forth over the next 2 weeks to get the entire list of 10 up.
Name: David Radford
Season: 5
Worst Performance: 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love'
Why We Loved Him (But Everyone Else Hated Him): David Radford was a shy high schooler from Crystal Lake, IL who tried out on Idol to show off his crooning style. Crooning, however, had never gone over well on the show. Season 3 VFTW pick John Stevens learned that the hard way when his Rat Pack renditions of songs like 'Crocodile Rock' earned him harsh criticism. But maybe David would bring something different to the table.
David actually took a few steps back for crooners by completely murdering every song he sang. Of course this was good news for VFTW and it landed him at #7 on the countdown. David wasn't happy with being labeled a crooner though, so he decided for his first performance in the semifinals to switch things up a bit to break out of the box. The results couldn't have been any better.
By interpreting Queen's 'Cray Little Thing Called Love' in a crooning style, David made the performance awkward and ridiculous. It was a true classic. David was clearly uncomfortable on stage and made plenty of strange stink faces while singing and did that nervous white boy dance when he wasn't sure what to do. He also adds in an amusing round of air drums and some awkward snapping. Overall, the performance was the definition of fish out of water and you knew the judges would rip him apart.
Randy Jackson hardly ever calls anything terrible, but he did use that word to describe David's performance. Simon says that the performance was a joke, but spared David's feelings by saying the audience would like him. Not even Simon could completely pounce on the guy who was clearly ready to start tearing up any minute from embarrassment.
David went on to last another week and didn't do much better with the crooner classic 'The Way You Look Tonight.' He didn't give up on music though, because there are some videos of him on YouTube singing other songs since his Idol time. So good for him. He seems to have evolved past the crooner thing and is still pursuing music. But his performance of 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' was one moment where everything went wrong, and it was a true classic. That's why he's the #7 worst semifinalist on the list.
I don't remember this guy at all. He is kind of cute, though. LOL at all the Kris Allen banners on the front page. WHERE'S MADAME'S BANNERS???? OMG, the automatic ad generator must be HOMOPHOBIC!!!
I remember him. It was kind of their fault that he crashed and burned. Like he mentions prior to that awful performance, they labeled him a crooner. They built him up and then once he did something else, he sucked so bad. Bahahaha.
It's cool that he has moved on from that. He sounds way better now than he did then.
See, I love crooners. I hate that they don't get any respect anymore these days (I love you Harry Connick Jr). But of course Idol isn't the place for them, because they are SUPPOSEDLY looking for contemporary and relevant.
I remember Crazy Little Thing... it was epicly bad! And although I really like his voice on this newer stuff, I hope he hasn't dropped the crooning thing altogether, he had a knack for it.
I remember him- I thought he was adorable, as well as terribly underage. I don't think I would've recognized him now, looks totally different (but still adorable).
