Dave, I have come to the conclusion that after seven seasons of American Idol, the only reason I watch it now is to reference your blog. You so wittily capture everything we’re thinking of. It’s like a hand guide to sanity!! Thanks!

I would love for someone to do some digging into the number of cds Chris is supposedly have sold. I don't believe those numbers at all. I only know of 2 people who have bought this cd. He doesn't sell out his tours unless he is touring with a well know band. Who are really buying all his cd's.
-Carolyn
This site is hilarious, especially the mail bag. I cannot believe that people can get the time to write novels about how horrible dave and the staff are. the law suites people are threatening with are the best, I always get a laugh. Keep up the good work so more people can right hilariously funny things. Thanks
-Justin

I THINK IT'S MORE THAN APPALLING THAT PRODUCERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO PICK TALENT GONE BAD AS TOP CONTESTENTS! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE "REAL AMERICAN IDOL"? IF THERE EVER WAS SUCH A THING! MY DAYS OF WATCHING AI ARE GONE! WHY DOES EVERYTHING IN LIFE HAVE TO BE FIXED ?
-Sandy
Thank you for the real insightful information. The show should be named'AmeriCON Idol" Yes, they are "conning" us all!
-Spinosjewels
I Just want to thank you all for everything you are doing and continue to do. I have hated this show and the mere ideas behind it since it's inception into the American market. I proudly support anything that will help bring down this show and then smile for the cameras when the public can go back to talking about something other than who got
"eliminated". I wish I could just finish taking all reality shows off of the air...
-Gregory
I appreciate your information about these supposed amateurs getting their "shot" on American Idol. I had suspected as much and I'm glad you exposed it. The show seems to have lost its reason for being.
I do take exception with your comment about the Confederate flag alienating most of America. Why would it alienate people any more than a singer wearing African colors on his head or a Malcolm X hat or Mexican flag, etc? I would argue that those things could alienate us even more.
I am a student of the South and misinformation and misinterpretation has led to many controversies about the flag.
For instance, that flag you saw in the video is officially called the Naval Jack. The battle flag of the Confederacy is square and the colors and number of stars are different.
Even if someone argues that any Confederate flag is a symbol of oppression because it few over a nation in which slavery was legal, then that person must also be prepared to be offended by the Stars and Stripes, which flew on slave ships and over a nation which condoned slavery for almost 90 years versus the four years of the Confederate flag.
The Confederate flag has been hijacked by racist groups but then again the KKK regularly also flies the Star and Stripes and Christian flags, often in larger numbers than the Confederate flag. Nobody calls for the abolition of those symbols because they recognize that the symbols are being abused and the truth is being distorted. The same is true of the Confederate flag.
Further, many Americans today believe the War Between the States was fought over slavery. First, less than 10 percent of those fighting for the South owned slaves. Second, there were slaves in the North as well. Third, many Southerners who wanted to protect slavery did not call for secession whle many Southerners who wanted an end to slavery supported secession. Fourth, one primary reason for the war involved a punitive tariff which forced Southerners to pay higher prices on goods to support the federal government, which in turn invested the funds to subsidize Northern industry. Fifth, another primary reason for the war was that there were disputes about the constitutionality of federal laws that threatened the state sovereignty that was guaranteed when the U.S. was formed.
During the war, not before it, ending slavery became a rallying cry as a way to keep England and France from joining the Confederate side and remain on the sidelines, and to rally many Northerners who had become skeptical of the war because the South was winning despite fewer men and less materiel at their disposal.
In a letter that Lincoln wrote a year into the war, he said: "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it, and if I could do it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would do that."
Slavery had gone on across the world for generations before the U.S. was born. It was actually dying out in the U.S. before the war, albeit slower than many would have liked because of agricultural needs. The soldiers fighting for the South did not fight to save slavery and their flag did not represent that. I agree that some racist groups have since used the flag but that doesn't mean that those ancestors who fought for the South should not be honored, remembered and appreciated just as all veterans who served our states.
At that time, the understanding of citizenship was much different than it is today. People considered themselves primarily as citizens of their state. The highest loyalty was to their state, not the U.S. That is why Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, who went to West Point and was offered command of the U.S. Army in 1861, declined, saying he could not betray his native Virginia.
Those who honor the Confederate flag today are some of the most patriotic Americans there are. For instance, Charlie Daniels has flown a Confederate flag and even wrote a song called The South's Gonna Do it Again yet he also wrote a song titled "In America." Here are some of the lyrics:
We may have done a little bit of fighting amongst ourselves,
but you outside people best leave us alone.
Cause we'll all stick together
and you can take that to the bank.
That's the cowboys and the hippies and the rebels and the yanks.
You just go and lay your hand on a Pittsburgh Steeler fan
and I think you're gonna finally understand.
And you never did think that it ever would happen again.
In America, did you?
You never did think that we'd ever get together again.
Well we damn sure fooled you.
We're walking real proud and we're talking real loud again
In America.
You never did think that it ever would happen again.
Anyway, I do appreciate your educating me about American Idol and I hope you, in some small way, appreciate some education about the Confederate flag and the Confederacy. While many race merchants today like stirring the pot in order to gain power, there's really no need to feel alienated. Thanks.
-Will
