We're teaming with AOL Television to name the 12 worst 'American Idol' semifinalists ever. We'll be posting one finalist each week. Check back next Tuesday for AOL's pick at #10.
Name: Jim Verraros
Season: 1
Worst Performance: 'Easy'
Why We Loved Him (But Everyone Else Hated Him): Jim Verraros was the original sappy sob story on Idol that overstayed his welcome, setting a precedent for Idol seasons to come. The child of two deaf parents, Jim milked the story for all it was worth. During his audition, he oversang a terrible version of "When I Fall in Love" while doing sign language because he just wishes his parents could magically hear him.
His parents don't know how lucky they are.
Jim made it onto the show to compete in the semifinal rounds and performed the same song again, yet somehow even worse. VFTW was formed in season 3, so we weren't around to vote for Jim. But after the following performance, he would have guaranteed himself our support.
Simon Cowell delivered his worst barb to date - "If you win this competition - we will have failed." That's like crack to VFTW. We love to vote for whoever Simon hates, so that would have been a call to arms for us.
The next night, Jim made it into the top 10 based on pure pity, which could technically be stated as the very first VFTW Victory on American Idol. Jim clearly did not deserve a spot, yet made it anyway. People were shocked and upset. If VFTW had been around at that point, we would have cackled.
When Jim got into the top 10, he performed "Easy" and yet again somehow sounded even worse than before.
Randy called it "really bad", Paula compared it him to an Olympian, and Simon called it "nowhere near good enough."
Unfortunately, the first results show saw 2 people being eliminated, and Jim was one of them. It's awesome to watch the very first American Idol finals results show and see how low rent and even worse it was back then.
After Idol, Jim went on to embrace his destiny as a bad gay stertotype. He released a few independent albums where he came off as a less irritating Adam Lambert (of course way before Adam came onto the scene to suck way worse) and released train wreck songs like "Touch (Don't U Want 2)".
Jim also starred in the movie "Eating Out" and "Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds". Despite the movies' titles, no meals at restaurants are in the script. How confusing!
So basically, Jim Verraros set the standard for all terrible Idol singers to come and then had a hilariously cheesy career afterwards. There's not much more we can ask for to make it onto this list. Had VFTW existed during season 1, Jim Verraros would have been our first pick ever, so he deserves his spot as the #11 Worst American Idol Finalist ever.
Check back next Tuesday for AOL's pick at #10.
