CKx, which is the company that owns American Idol, is set to undergo a retooling according to the New York Times. The company will now be known as Core Media Group. Marc Graboff, President of Core, says the show will be changed, including possible changes to the voting system. Hilariously enough, taking away voting control from the viewers will just make people tune out more, killing the show even faster. Some of the changes may be based on successful tweaks made to international versions of Idol. Graboff went on to use the Vote For the Worst coined term WGWG when talking about the past male winners.
One of the areas Mr. Fuller is closely looking at, Mr. Graboff said, is the voting process. As many critics have noted, the show has produced five similar winners in a row. “They’re being called W.G.W.G.’s — white guys with guitars,” Mr. Graboff said. These outcomes have been interpreted as a result of so many young girls voting for the cutest male performer.
It's pretty amusing that even the President of the comapny that owns Idol is now being forced to use WGWG in their vernacular since everyone knows it. Though when will people learn - young girls are not the reasons for WGWGs. It's crusty, old housewives who have nothing better to do than eat fried chicken will dialing with their greasy fingers. Young girls have abandonded this show - the average viewer is old enough to have teenage children. And since those people will never stop watching Idol, nor will we, you can guarantee will we all produce #wgwg6 next year no matter what tweaks are made.
Also hilarious is that Graboff thinks the show dropped 30% in ratings due to the format being stale. Nope, it's simple. The show dropped so much because a) there are too many singing shows on TV and b) the contestants this year were boring as hell. Get an interesting cast and it'll fix your problems. But Idol isn't smart enough to realize that. They think Jessica Sanchez was interesting. Oh well, once Idol is cancelled, it'll give us more time to mess with other shows. (Story via MJ's Big Blog)
