Yeah, I think it was more to make some buzz about him. They couldn't be serious about hire someone who didn't win the show and had several singles that flopped.

It looks like Mariah signing with Idol is basically a done deal, and she'll be getting $17 million, which is a giant F-You to J-Lo, who would've gladly stayed for that type of cash. With all the money being spent on Mariah, there's hardly any left and Idol will need to scrape the bottom of the barrel for the two remaining judges, hence Adam Lambert and Fergie.
