Kellie Pickler's Video for "Don't You Know You're Beautiful"

Kellie's new video for her "you look good just the way you are, so listen to my advice even though I got a boob job because I wasn't happy the way I was" song has arrived. It's typical bubble gum country fare, kind of catchy, kind of bland. Though it's amusing to hear her sing about how she wishes she didn't lose her virginity in a pick-up truck. Thoughts?

It's an exploitative, dishonest, and hypocritical song sung by someone who does not believe in or subscribe to it's main message, i.e. "you're pretty the way you are."

It's the same thing that happened with Ashlee Simpson in her interview with Marie Claire magazine in July of 2006 where she was quoted as saying, "Everyone is made differently, and that’s what makes us beautiful and unique. I want girls to look in the mirror and feel confident." Then, in between the time when she gave this interview and when the magazine was published, Simpson got a nose job.

You have to love celebrity culture: "Hey, kids, you should absolutely feel good about yourselves and never want to change! No, not because we're actually all beautiful and unique, but because you're not as rich as me and you can't afford plastic surgery, so you're stuck with that ugly nose and pointy chin and goofy ears! So I guess what I mean is that you're ugly, but you're poor, so you might as well lie to yourself. Just like I'm lying to you in my songs and magazine quotes. Wow, this is getting complicated! I think I need to go have a toke to chill out. Oh, that reminds me... Don't do drugs!"

I can't see a bunch of hicks in a roller rink without thinking of the movie Monster. I bet after she's done singing and roller skating she's going to go turn tricks on the highway but then kill the guy that picks her up.

Also, if she starts lezzing out with Christina Ricci, that would be a much better video than this one.

What I don't understand is why songs like this always end up having music videos with fairly attractive people in them. Wouldn't it speak a more serious message to many women if there were a little less perfection being portrayed? I mean, c'mon! They're all blonde and perfect, like Kellie. Why not put someone who as the lyrics indicate, with "tangled hair and tattered clothes"? Someone with a zit that isn't wearing any makeup. I don't know...something. Meh, whatever.

She isn't extremely talented, but it seems like she could still do better than this. Guess not. *shrugs* Oh well.

I kind of find it hard not to like her. That and the fact that there was a song on her first album I found myself surprisingly addicted to. I was just as shocked.
