The Wonderdog thing must be from 1982, because that's when "Ruff Mix" was a minor hit in the UK, and even got on "Top of the Pops" as we saw in the YouTube video. TOTP was a massive show at that time.

When I looked for the Wonderdog clip, I saw that someone had uploaded another early Cowell TV appearance that I hadn't seen before. Here he is on a cheap 'n' cheesy UK revival of "Sale of the Century":

This may actually be from as early as 1989, as I think that particular version of SOTC was only made then. It was on a satellite channel long before more than a handful of people even had satellite dishes. This was around the time when Simon had financial troubles and had to start again. Perhaps he needed that Fiat Uno!
