Jason Castro sang a crappy version during season 7 of American Idol and he probably had no idea the trend he was about to start. Then Tim Urban did a similarly boring version during season 9. Later that season, Simon Cowell picked the song for Lee DeWyze, telling us that we've never heard the song the way he would sing it (like he was receiving an enema).

So why ban this song? Well first, if people like Tim Urban and Lee DeWyze can sing it, it can't take much talent. Second, the song has been debated as either about religion or making fun of religion. So the annoying Christian contestants that sing it are either being preachy or they're oblivious to the song's true meaning. Either way, it's not a fit for this show. And lastly, the obnoxious lightning and theatrics that the Idol crew produces each time someone sings this song get worse each time. Jason Castro sang the song with one spotlight, Tim Urban got the spotlight and some more lighting to highlight his feathered hair. Then Lee got a whole choir, a fog machine, and an orchestra. Next time someone attempts this song, Idol will have to let out a flock of fucking doves and have a double rainbow on stage to top it. So ban this song before it's too late.

Back in 2008, VFTW and AOL put together a list of the 12 most overdone Idol songs from Journey's "Open Arms" to Phil Collins' "Against All Odds (The VFTW Theme Song)." And while Idol has gotten slightly better about reducing the number of Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, and Elton John songs on the program (slightly), the show has started to rely on a new class of overdone songs to carry its program.

If Idol is looking to improve the show, we ask that they just flat out ban all songs that have been sung on the show before. Make the karaoke singers try something new. But since we know they won't listen, we've compiled a new list songs that Idol has used and abused these past few years to the point of making us want to never hear them again.

We'll be posting the songs over the next few days to encourage Idol to cut the crap and make the show watchable in a train wreck way again. Make sure to leave comments and let us know if you agree or disagree.
